Disaster Business

Damage is an issue of dollars
when disaster strikes
we ask
how much did it cost
of utmost concern must be

the money

destruction of homes, farmland and livelihood
is too abstract
the people demand a number
body counts are lovely,
but a quick and cold monetary value
there’s nothing comparable to tallying up the billions
to strike terror at the hearts
of our beloved and beleaguered financial institutions
a picture of corpses, bloated
blood and severed limbs
amongst the wreckage and rubble
that’s pretty nice
good horror show – the stuff of mortality
that’s fine
what the audience needs though
the big shocker
a mind-boggling twelve digit figure
and a reminder of the fate worse than death
bankruptcy, insolvency
devastation’s estimations
the real human interest story
is in the insurance company’s CEO’s office
pity him and the payouts to be made
shed a tear for the man on the top floor
his business could be ruined
and nothing matters more
