Endeavour

This is a super power putting itself to sleep
glory days are ghetto boulevards
to mothballs driven
the purge port is open
and it is itself pouring forth
turned inside out
rewinding 4,671 orbits
“sad to see her land for the last time”
we the people, done now
with challenging lift-offs
content to Columbian descents
broken up dead
pieces strewn ‘cross the ground
or delivered to museum bound
police escorted
pomp and circumstance through the town
Manchester to Crenshaw
north to MLK
obsolescence rides into storage
amidst cheers and photography
spectators line the streets
applaud from business rooftops
“Caskets & More 4 Less”
as the Toyota Tundra arrives for the tow
children wide-eyed
under astronaut helms
watch the commercial
truck and shuttle, flags wave
“Born in America” on the bumper
pom-poms shimmy in cheerleader fists
hip-hip-hooray under Randy’s donuts
on the slow roll to the final hang-up
a lesson from the past
what might we learn
from the replacement for a failure
