The Last Supper

March 1, 2016

Seed, soil and hydrological cycle
one sprout from starvation
from total global catastrophic
crop failure
a farmer’s calloused hands
a bio-engineered miracle
we bank on them
to fill the grocery tins
with beets and beans and boiled
heat and serve potatoes
when the beating of life
gets to be too much to peal
permanent expectations of plenty
one rain drop away from disillusionment
one tear drop too many
fallen on salted earth
the empty market baskets
brought home to children
too sick and gone
to understand
the cloudless sky
that keeps its rain only
far out to sea
as parents serve plates
of dust and dead tree bark
a day away
from serving their children
to themselves
